The Rock Garden

Created for Major Stewart and his wife Katharine in the 1920 by Backhouses of York, the Rock Garden is one of the original features of the Gardens and visitors of all ages love to explore its narrow pathways, stone steps and tiny bridges.

Please be aware that it is the only area of the Gardens that is not fully accessible to wheelchairs and buggies.

UPDATE MARCH 2017: As part of our exciting Heritage Lottery Fund Project, the Rock Garden is being extensively renovated during late 2016 and 2017. Old plants and foliage have been removed, the ground will then be left fallow and, in the autumn of 2018, extensive re-planting will then take place using the original Backhouse plant catelogues, thereby ensuring that the unique heritage of this area is preserved and enhanced. The 2017 and 2018 summer seasons will provide an unique opportunity to see the Rock Garden completely fallow, thereby allowing visitors to view how the rocks were laid out by Backhouses back in the Stewarts' day.
